Project Intent:
It is my intent with this project to graphically illustrate a vibrant landscape of Kansas City’s contemporary culture through the thoughts of the citizens whom live here. I aim to utilize a narrative structure to illustrate the uniquely distinguished culture of Kansas City. At this phase in the project, rapid prototyping, in depth research, and story collecting has fueled my output and has aided further my focus for the piece.
Research has taken form with various graphic prototypes that address the ways in which a story is most successfully told. Documentaries, interviews, photo essays, and comparisons have aided in the research process, giving me a better understanding of storytelling and the way I intend to frame this project.
Meanwhile, I have been and will continually be collecting stories from Kansas City citizens. I intend to interview a wide range of residents (old, young, weird, cool, trendy, edgy) to fully encompass Kansas City’s cultural aesthetics and visual landscape. I will also be experimenting with the way I obtain these stories; comparing and analyzing the benefits of photography, video, spoken word, written text, and interactive experiences. I would also like to challenge the idea of story collecting by creating different “containers” to house the content. I think that this experimentation will be instrumental in the design of the final artifact.
At this point, however, I am still unsure as to what form (print artifact, interactive experience, video sequence, spatial exhibit, etc) is ideal and will properly give cultural prominence to Kansas City’s contemporary culture. I do know that whatever I produce will house a narrative structure with content pulled directly from the citizens of the community.
